Doug D’Amore is the Owner/Forester of the company and its only employee. He brings forty
(40) years of varied forestry and land management experience to the company and the services it
provides. That experience ranges from “traditional” jobs like marking and cruising timber to
dealing with the Marcellus Shale gas drilling boom and abandoned mine land reclamation. I am a
1981 graduate of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, School of Forest
Technology (New York State Ranger School) with an Associates Degree in Forest Technology
and a 1984 graduate of the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources with a
Bachelors Degree in Forestry.
The first five (5) years of my career were a series of seasonal and entry level jobs with the U.S.
Forest Service, universities and various private companies. That work experience included
among other duties laying out roads, fighting wildfires, managing, cruising and marking timber,
designating timber stand improvement units, and procuring logs for sawmills and veneer buyers.
The jobs were as varied as the employer and were worked across the country.
In 1986 I started a thirty-five (35) year career with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry. The first six (6) years were spent as the service
forester for Bucks and Montgomery Counties working with landowners and municipalities on a
variety of forest management issues. The next seven (7) years were spent as a silvicultural
specialist for half of the State Forest System doing timber sale and regeneration contracts and
quality control checks. The last twenty-two (22) years were spent on the 307,000 acre Sproul
State Forest, Pennsylvania’s largest. The first four (4) years were as the Assistant District
Forester responsible for the road, bridge, building and other infrastructure maintenance plus the
District’s fire and cooperative forest management programs. The last eighteen (18) years were
as the District Forester responsible for forest, timber, gas, coal, wildlife, and recreation
management in addition to the above duties. I was also responsible for long term planning,
property purchases and disputes, budgeting and law enforcement supervision. I am a
Pennsylvania Licensed Pesticide Applicator.
I am National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualified as a Field Observer (FOBS),
Interagency Resource Representative (IARR) and Crew Representative (CREP). I was formerly
qualified as a Crew Boss (CRWB). I have over twenty-four (24) trips to large wildfires in over a
dozen western states starting in 1981. This in addition to dealing with numerous wildfires and
prescribed fires over the years in Pennsylvania. I am a Pennsylvania Forest Fire Warden.
Over the course of my career, I have dealt with just about every conceivable issue a landowner
can be confronted with from both nature and humans. On the nature side I’ve dealt with
tornados, windstorms, floods and large wildfires and their aftermath. On the human side have
been abandoned coal mines, degraded water, timber theft, minerals development and boundary
disputes. I’ve also dealt with six (6) large interstate pipeline projects, recreation site
development and companies wishing to film television shows and movies. All of the above is in
addition to the traditional jobs of cruising and marking timber, fighting fire, maintaining roads,
and dealing with forest pest infestations.
On the personal side I grew up hunting, fishing and camping in the forests of Elk County. My
wife Jenny and I have lived in Clinton County since 2000. I am an avid white-tailed deer and
ruffed grouse hunter. One of the main reasons I chose Winterberry Forestry Consultants as my
company name is to honor the memory of the dogs I have shared many a wonderful day within
the woods of Northcentral Pennsylvania chasing ruffed grouse through the winterberry thickets
of the Allegheny Plateau. Please check the services offered page for more information on how
we can work with you to manage your valuable forest resources.
